A classic among them: corn dogs, which are called American dogs in Japan. Deep-fried until golden brown on the outside, with a juicy sausage inside, conveniently on a skewer, served with mustard and ketchup.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll find them in almost every konbini, but also at school and town festivals, where they\u2019re particularly popular with children and teenagers. The Japanese version tastes a bit softer, slightly sweet and really lovely and fluffy. In Japan, this snack is known as <em>American Dog<\/em>, a term that has become firmly established in everyday language. The name may sound Western, but the Japanese version has long since developed its own style: instead of cornflour, as in the American original, a fluffy wheat batter is used, which tastes slightly sweet and puffs up to a golden brown when deep-fried.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Corn dogs were originally invented in the 1940s by German-American butchers in Texas who were trying to establish their sausages in American cuisine. They simply dipped their sausages in cornflour batter and deep-fried them \u2013 and the \u2018Corny Dog\u2019 was born. Kept warm under a heat lamp, wrapped in greaseproof paper, sometimes even with dips already in the packet. For many, it\u2019s a childhood snack \u2013 a quick grab on the way home from school or to go with a cold bottle of green tea.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, the recipe was adapted to local tastes: milder in flavour, with softer dough and practical packaging, often in paper bags and with squeeze sachets for mustard and ketchup. You\u2019ll find <em>American Dogs<\/em> in almost every convenience store, but also at matsuri festivals, in amusement parks or at mobile food stalls. And there are even regional variations: In Hokkaido, for example, so-called <em>French Dogs<\/em> are sold; they look similar, but instead of ketchup, they are sprinkled with icing sugar. All you need are a few simple ingredients, a shallow pan with neutral oil, and a craving for a crispy Japanese street food classic.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The key ingredients for Japanese corn dogs:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sausages:<\/strong> Classic Vienna sausages or mild chicken sausages work best. They shouldn\u2019t be too thick, so they cook evenly in the batter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Batter:<\/strong> Mix together plain flour, a little cornflour, egg, milk, sugar, salt, pepper and a pinch of baking powder to make a smooth batter. Depending on what you fancy \u2013 whether savoury, vegetarian, filled with cheese or even sweet \u2013 there are endless possibilities with this snack. And that\u2019s exactly what makes it so versatile: one basic recipe, lots of ideas.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vegetarian<\/strong>: Instead of sausages, you can also use cheese cubes (e.g. mozzarella or Gouda) or Tofu sticks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegan<\/strong>: The batter works without egg and milk too; e.g. with plant-based milk and bicarbonate of soda.
