What is a Takoyaki pan?

A Takoyaki pan is a special pan with round moulds, used to prepare the Japanese speciality Takoyaki. These are small dough balls traditionally filled with octopus. During cooking, they are turned in the pan so that they take on their typical round shape and a crispy surface. Takoyaki are among Japan’s best-known street food dishes and originate from Osaka.

What is this pan suitable for?

The pan is ideal for classic Takoyaki, but can also be used for many other variations. As well as octopus, prawns, chicken, meat, mushrooms or vegetables can be used as fillings. Vegetarian or sweet versions are also possible. Thanks to the 14 moulds, several balls can be cooked at the same time, making the pan well-suited for cooking together or small street food evenings.

What is special about cast iron?

Cast iron retains heat particularly well and ensures even heat distribution. This makes the Takoyaki crispy on the outside, whilst the inside remains soft. These material properties are a key reason why traditional Takoyaki pans are often made from cast iron. With a little oil, the surface develops a natural non-stick effect over time.

Tip: My Takoyaki pan has rust spots – what can I do?

Our Takoyaki pans are made of untreated cast iron. This material is particularly durable and retains heat exceptionally well. However, it does require some care. Slight rusting may occur, especially if the pan has come into contact with moisture during transport or storage. This is completely normal for cast iron and can be easily remedied.

How to remove rust and prepare the pan correctly:

  1. Removing rust: Gently rub the affected areas with a little cooking oil (e.g. rapeseed oil) and a kitchen towel or soft brush.
  2. Thorough cleaning: Rinse the pan with warm water – please do not use washing-up liquid. Then leave it to dry completely.
  3. Seasoning: Rub the pan with heat-resistant oil and season it in the oven at approx. 200°C for 30–60 minutes. This creates a natural protective layer.
  4. Day-to-day care: After use, clean only with warm water, dry thoroughly and lightly oil. This will keep the cast iron rust-free for the long term.

If the rust cannot be removed or you are dissatisfied with the condition of the pan, please get in touch – we will find a solution or, if you wish, send a replacement pan.
