What is sushi rice?
Sushi rice is a special short-grain round-grain rice that develops a slightly sticky texture when cooked. This makes it perfect for sushi rolls, nigiri, Onigiri or rice bowls. How do I prepare sushi rice properly?
Wash the rice thoroughly before cooking until the water runs clear. Then cook it in a rice cooker or saucepan using the correct amount of water (usually 1:1.1 to 1:1.2). How do I store the rice and how long does it keep?
The rice should be stored in a dry, dark and cool place – ideally in an airtight container. This preserves the flavour and ensures the rice keeps for many months.
Please note that the rice comes directly from Japan and has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of packaging, as specified by the manufacturer. As transport by ship to Europe usually takes at least 6 months, the printed best-before date is correspondingly shorter upon arrival. Please note, therefore, that the remaining shelf life of the product at the time of sale is often only a few months or weeks. The quality and taste remain unchanged, however, as long as the rice is stored in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
