What is Japanese cold brew iced coffee?
Japanese iced coffee is a refreshing creation made by pouring hot water directly over ground coffee on ice. This unique method combines ice and hot-brewed coffee to bring out a rich spectrum of flavours. The secret? The ice cubes instantly lock in the diverse flavours, ranging from caramel to berries, delivering a more intense taste experience than traditionally cold-brewed coffee.

The art of Japanese iced coffee, deeply rooted in its homeland, brings out the subtle nuances of the coffee beans and reveals a brighter, more complex aroma. By adjusting the pour speed and grind size, every sip can become a personalised experience.
In Japan, where respect for ingredients and the care taken in preparation are celebrated, this method is not only a testament to culinary precision but also a symbol of the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Japanese iced coffee and let every sip transport you to the cultural diversity of Japan.
Make iced coffee just like in Japan:
For this refreshing drink, we need:
- Coffee (preferably freshly ground!)
- Ice cubes
- Cream (or a vegan alternative)
To make Japanese cold brew iced coffee, first heat water to just below boiling point and allow it to cool slightly. Grind 30 g of coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency and prepare your coffee dripper with a moistened paper filter.

Fill a coffee pot with 150 g of ice cubes, place the ground coffee in the filter and pour 150 ml of the cooled water over it. After a short wait, pour a further 200 ml of water over it. The finished iced coffee is then served with extra ice cubes and, optionally, cream.

Equipment for your iced coffee
To make Japanese cold brew iced coffee, you’ll need a few basic utensils to ensure an authentic and enjoyable coffee experience. An essential tool is the coffee dripper, which ensures the coffee is extracted evenly and gives it its characteristic aroma.
You’ll also need a heat-resistant coffee pot into which the freshly brewed coffee can drip directly over ice to immediately lock in its flavours. Not to be forgotten are the paper filters, which trap unwanted oils and fine particles, ensuring a clear, pure taste. Ingredients (2 cups)
30 g coffee (preferably freshly ground!)
150 g ice cubes
350 ml water
2 tbsp cream (or a vegan alternative)
Useful equipment:
Coffee dripper
Coffee pot (auf Amazon* kaufen)
Paper coffee filters
For professionals: Filter coffee maker (auf Amazon* kaufen)
Preparation (5 minutes)

Step 1
Prepare the ingredients for Japanese cold coffee. Tip: Check that you have enough ice cubes! Heat a sufficient amount of water in a kettle until it reaches the boiling point. As soon as it boils, remove the kettle from the heat and let the water cool to around 96ºC.

Passaggio 2
If necessary, grind 30 g of coffee beans to a medium to medium-fine consistency.
Meanwhile, place a paper filter in your coffee filter (also known as a coffee dripper) and place it on a heat-resistant jug. Moisten the filter with approx. 100 ml of hot water using circular movements to ensure it is thoroughly moistened. Allow the water to run through completely, then remove it from the jug.

Step 3
Place the jug, without the filter and paper, on a kitchen scale and switch them on. Now add 150 g of ice cubes to the jug.

Step 4
Place the coffee filter back on the jug. Add the ground coffee to the filter and spread it out evenly. Reset the scales and carefully pour 150 ml of hot water in a circular motion over the coffee grounds. Wait 30 seconds until the coffee has drained through. Then add another 200 ml of hot water and let the coffee drain through again. You should end up with about 500 ml of coffee.

Step 5
Serve the Japanese cold brew in a glass with extra ice cubes and, if desired, a dollop of cream.
