Whisky Highball – mix a Japanese night-cap in 5 minutes

The world’s simplest cocktail: the whisky highball! This quick recipe for a proper nightcap requires just 3 ingredients (whisky, soda water or mineral water, and ice cubes). Round off the evening with an alcoholic classic from a typical Japanese izakaya!

A perfect whisky highball consists of just three essential components: a spirit, a carbonated ‘filler’ and, of course, ice cubes! Sounds too simple to be true? That’s true, but for all its simplicity, a whisky highball is a wonderful refreshment on a balmy summer’s evening or after a hearty Japanese meal!

As the name naturally suggests, this recipe uses a whisky distilled from grain as the spirit. Generally speaking, whiskies have a robust flavour and therefore form a great base for delicious, characterful cocktails.

This recipe does not use whisky from Scotland, the birthplace of this high-proof speciality, but rather a typical Japanese whisky from the Suntory brand. Suntory whisky may not be among Japan’s most award-winning varieties, but it is at least available in many shops and Asian supermarkets at reasonable prices.

Even though whisky (compared to Sake and nihonshu) hasn’t been produced in Japan for very long, it is nevertheless astonishing that per capita whisky consumption in the Land of the Rising Sun is higher than in, for example, America or Great Britain! A visit to a Japanese izakaya (a typical pub) reveals that traditional cocktails such as Whisky Sour or Whisky Highball feature prominently on the drinks menu.

Find out how you too can mix this typical Japanese cocktail yourself (for example, during a cosy sushi evening with family and friends) with this simple recipe! Have fun and good luck making your Whisky Highball!
