Whisky Sour – Would you like to make and serve a classic Japanese cocktail at home without too much effort? This straightforward recipe shows you, step by step, the best way to easily make this classic cocktail yourself.

The basis for a proper Whisky Sour consists of three essential components: spirit, sweetener and tart lemon juice. Incidentally, the original form of every cocktail is built on these elements.

As the name naturally suggests, the spirit used in this recipe is a whisky distilled from grain. Whiskies generally have a robust flavour and therefore form a great base for delicious, characterful cocktails.

This recipe does not use whisky from Scotland, the birthplace of this high-proof speciality, but rather a typical Japanese whisky from the Suntory brand. Suntory whisky may not be among Japan’s most award-winning varieties, but it is at least available in many shops and Asian supermarkets at reasonable prices.

Even though whisky (compared to Sake and nihonshu) hasn’t been produced in Japan for very long, it’s astonishing that per capita whisky consumption in the Land of the Rising Sun is higher than in, for example, America or Great Britain! A visit to a Japanese izakaya (a typical pub) reveals that it is mainly traditional cocktails such as the whisky sour or whisky highball that feature on the drinks menu.

Find out how you too can mix this typical Japanese cocktail yourself (for example, during a cosy sushi evening with family and friends) with this simple recipe! Have fun and good luck making your Whisky Sour!
