Making your own Takoyaki sauce made easy! Fancy the authentic taste of homemade Takoyaki sauce with this simple recipe? Inspired by the Japanese original, this sweet, savoury and slightly tangy mix promises a real taste experience – and all in just a few passages!
Drizzle the sauce over Takoyaki, the crispy Japanese grilled octopus balls, and experience street food just like it’s straight from Osaka. These crispy-on-the-outside, flavourful-on-the-inside balls are traditionally served with Takoyaki sauce and a dollop of Japanese mayonnaise.
My simple recipe calls for Worcestershire sauce, tsuyu, sugar and ketchup. Mix all the ingredients together and adjust the sauce to your taste. It’s really a piece of cake to make and brings the authentic taste of Japan into your kitchen!

A standout feature of Takoyaki is the sweet and savoury sauce that gives these crispy octopus balls their distinctive character. Without this unique Takoyaki sauce, the balls would be only half as delicious. Its flavour is reminiscent of the famous Otafuku’s Takoyaki flavour, a blend of sweetness and deep Umami.
Although you can find ready-made Takoyaki sauce in many Asian supermarkets, making it yourself is a real experience. With just a few simple steps and ingredients, you’ll have an authentic sauce ready to go.
