Onigiri rice moulds, set of 2 (triangular Onigiri moulds)

Psssstttt… I’ll let you in on a closely guarded secret! How do the Japanese manage to make perfect rice triangles? Of course, some simply have practice and shape Onigiri easily by hand. But many others know a trick: they simply use an Onigiri mould!

Basically, nowadays you can almost only buy triangular Onigiri in Japan. There’s a simple reason for this: in the 1980s, demand for Onigiri in Japan suddenly grew, and technical capabilities kept improving, so mechanising Onigiri production made perfect sense at the time.

The hand-rolled round rice balls that had been common until then could not be replicated by the newly developed machine. Instead, three corners proved much more practical for production, packaging and transport. And the Japanese have stuck with this method to this day!
